Observations

I really enjoyed this baby storytime. The babies were laughing and smiling when their parents/guardians did the “Itsy-Bitsy Spider” on them. Parents actually requested that we do this one several times.

All Kinds of Kisses was great for this age group. The adults all made animals noises depending on what animal was receiving a kiss. I even had two babies trying to climb in my lap during the story.

We did not do one-on-one reading for this session. The babies were super active, so we just pulled out the toys.

Playtime

Observations

This was my first structured baby time ever, so I was slightly nervous about how the parents/guardians would receive it. Overall, I was extremely pleased with how well it went.

For my preparation, I made large posters that I could put up on our easel. I did not want to paper sheets, as I had read many times that parents start focusing on reading tiny print instead of interacting with their babies.

I also made sure to make the environment inclusive for everyone attending. I sat directly on the floor with the parents. We all formed a circle, so no one felt left out. The circle is great for keeping babies from escaping. I also had everyone introduce themselves and their babies.

For the actual storytime, it was the perfect length. Rhymes were repeated 2-3 times. The book was fun. Parents actually interacted with their baby when I talked about the ears, nose, and etc. The babies even stopped for a few moments to listen to me read.

Observations

Like the toddlers, the preschoolers ate up this storytime. The kids enjoyed acting like cats when we did the two action rhymes. I even had a kid who arched her back like a cat.

All three of the books were a smashing hit. The preschoolers enjoyed Cat Secrets. They also enjoyed guessing what the cat would sit on in What Will Fat Cat Sit On?. The winner (of course) was Pete the Cat and His Magic Sunglasses. We all started moving pretty groovy as the book went on. The craft fit the book perfectly!

I would say the highlight of the storytime was Rainbow Kittens. Like the puppy storytime, we named the six kitties. The preschoolers actually named the kittens after colors. Then when I started dipping each kitty in their specific color, I received lots of “ooooohhhhhs and ahhhhhs” from the crowd. I did add my own twist on this flannel. Another blogger mentioned that she had cat puppet that licked all the kitties back to white. I decided to make a flannel mama kitty and then have her change to a tie-dye color after she cleaned all her kittens. The crowd really liked this surprise.

The super best part was watching the kids interact with the flannel after storytime. A little boy was dipping each kitten in their colors and putting each kitten back up on the board. He then would take the mommy kitty and clean the kittens back to white. He did this for about five minutes. A little girl even joined in with him. This made my heart so happy!

Observations

We had a blast with this storytime. The kids really enjoyed making cat noises with me. The books also went over really well. I was able to hook the kids with Cat Secrets by doing voices for each cat. It was also recommended to me that Cat Secrets makes an awesome puppet storytime. The kids also liked trying to find Tippy in Where is Tippy Toes? I had a third book, but I scraped it. I felt like the flow would have been disrupted by adding a third book.

Observations

The preschoolers had just as much fun with this theme as the two-year-olds. I did switch up the books from my Tales for Two session.

Bark George was still a big hit. The kids were engaged and answered my questions about George. The Doghouse was awesome. Actually anything by Jan Thomas is awesome. The kids loved the animals’ responses to being pushed into the doghouse. Unfortunately, Mister Bud Wears the Cone was not as big as hit as I hoped. It was my mistake for choosing two funny books and then going to a more solemn story. I would probably recommend doing Say Hello to Zorro instead.

The kids also named the flannel puppets. They were a bit more creative than my two-year-old group and actually gave me names.

Observations

I just knew that I had to dress-up for this storytime. Of course it had to be puppy ears. I made these super cute dalmatian ears in one night and received some nice “oooooo” from the kids when I put them on to start the storytime.

The toddlers really liked this storytime. They enjoyed Bark George and really liked Yip! Snap! Yap!. Everyone liked making all the noises along with me. Underwater Doggies was ok. The kids were restless by the time we reached this story. It might be a better book for colors or kicking off a storytime.

The puppets were fun. They are currently missing eyes as I ran out of time the night before. However, the kids didn’t mind. We actually named them before we did the rhyme. I had a lot of “puppy” for chosen names.

I actually got feedback about the craft the next week. One mom said that her twins girls really enjoyed making the craft and talking about puppies. She even put magnets on the back of each puppy dog so her girls could hang them on the fridge.
